In the recent past, several substantial unrestricted donations have been made to the Foundation.
Perpetuation of significant donations through Endowments where principal is conserved with income to be used for charitable purposes sustains the ability of the Foundation to provide support on a continuing basis. Accordingly at its AGM in Bangor, Pennsylvania, the Board of Directors unanimously approved a motion to create a Benefactors Endowment where principal is fully conserved. Income or a fraction thereof is to be utilized on an annual basis to provide financial support for Welsh-North American activities as approved by the Board of Directors.
Minimum donations are to be at the level of Individual Life Membership and should be made to the "NWAF Benefactors Endowment", unless a donor specifically directs otherwise. A list of benefactors will be published on a regular basis.
The Endowment principal already exceeds $16,000, through the generosity of the late Col Alfred J Reese J., Wilfred O Greenway, and the Barckley Family Trust established by Gwendolyn and Marvin Barckley.
Income from the Endowment will be available for the benefit of Welsh-American activities. It is to be emphasized that the Endowment is open to further gifts with a minimum designated amount of $225 – the Foundation’s Individual Life Membership level of contribution. If you wish to make a donation to the Foundation that will be perpetuated and publicly acknowledged, please consider the Benefactors Endowment as a place to direct your gift.
The Benefactors Endowment will further enhance the other ones that have been established over the years through the generosity of our major donors:
Established 1984. Provides income to fund the Exchange Scholarship.
Established May 1997. Income to be used for awards to students at Bangor University for study in the field of entrepreneurship in Wales.
Established 2005. Income to provide Scholarship to cover travel to Wales and expenses incurred in undertaking studies related to Welsh-American history and culture.
Established 1986. Scholarship from accrued income, to be awarded at commencement to High School seniors in Remsen, Holland Patent, Adirondack or Rome Center School Districts.
These endowments, together with membership dues and donations, provide the backbone for our charitable activities and for the maintenance of an office that, in the hands of Lorena Bennett, handles the myriad of inquiries and interactions that makes the Foundation a cornerstone of Welsh-American life.
