NWAF Scholarships - 2009

Lloyd Family Travel Scholarship

The recipient of the 2009 Lloyd Family Travel Scholarship is Stephen Matthew Jones from Muncie, Indiana. He was a recipient of a Col. Alfred J. Reese Youth Scholarship at the North American Festival of Wales in Chicago in 2008. He will use the award to support travel to Wales this summer to carry on research at the National Library at Wales and to attend Welsh Heritage Week. His research will be preparatory to his research for a PhD in Welsh literature at Ball University in Indiana where he received his MA in English literature in 2007. Stephen plans an academic career with a commitment to involve himself in Welsh-American life as he has demonstrated in the past through his attendance at Welsh Heritage Week, the North American Festival of Wales about which he wrote in NINNAU™.

NWAF Exchange Scholarship

The 2009 NWAF Exchange Scholarship recipient is Krista ‘Kit’ Kapphahn from Gig Harbor, Washington. Krista, the recipient of the Lloyd Family Travel Scholarship in 2008, is completing an MA in Medieval Welsh literature at Aberystwyth University having among other accomplishments translated Taliesin's "Marwnad Owein”. She now has a formal prospectus for her PhD thesis and will be presenting some of her work at a forthcoming Conference. Her path to Aberystwyth includes a degree in Communications from Washington State University and another in Medieval Studies from the University of Oregon. In 2005 she left Northwest Public Radio, where she had worked as an announcer and producer, to move to Oregon where she earned a post-baccalaureate degree in Medieval Studies. Her eventual goal is to become a Professor in her area of expertise in the USA. We look forward to that with the hope that she will be prominent in North American-Welsh life and will maintain a longstanding relationship with the NWAF.
